What this is

An AI agent is a system that decides and acts, not just responds. Instead of answering a question, it reads a request, chooses steps, calls your tools, and completes a task: pulling a record, drafting a reply, updating a system, then handing back a result. The value is leverage on work that used to need a person watching a screen.

You need one when a process has judgment in the middle. If the steps are fixed every time, a plain automation is cheaper and more reliable. Agents earn their keep when the path changes with the input: triaging inbound messages, researching a lead, reconciling mismatched data, or coordinating a task across several apps. Anyone pitching an agent for work whose steps never vary is selling you complexity you will pay to maintain.

Good work here looks boring in the best way. The agent has clear boundaries, a human checkpoint on anything risky, logging you can audit, and graceful failure when it is unsure. Be wary of anyone who demos a flashy autonomous loop without showing guardrails, evaluation, or how they measured that it actually works.
